ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY (M2) 0, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA-LAS VEGAS (M2) 6

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tempe, AZ. (12/6/09)-The Sun Devils had a tough time getting the puck to the net, resulting in their shut-out loss of the season. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas (17-3), coming off a heart-breaking loss to Arizona State’s Division I team, took revenge with a 6-0 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils. With the loss, the Devils drop to .500 for the first time this season.

The first period opened almost identical to the Division I game the night before when UNLV came out charging to a 3-0 lead. Every goal was in large part to a flat Devils’ team and lack of puck possession. “We came out flat,” ASU coach Adam Schoenfeld stated after the loss. “We can’t wake up and play physical once we get down like that.” His words were short but true. The second and third period were better defensively for the Devils, however the offense never came alive. With 32 shots on goal for the Devils, few were effective and few found open lanes. The Rebels, however, continued to get open lanes and force turnovers in their offensive zone. Forward Scott Rensmon led the Rebels in scoring with two goals, each coming on pinpoint shooting.   When the game seemed all-but-over, the Sun Devils became physical and penalty minutes began to rack up. The game, which lasted just under three hours, was short of fluent as stoppage came time and time again to sort out penalties. The consequences will be heavy for both teams as Kyle Curry, a UNLV defenseman, received his 3rd game disqualification of the season resulting in an early end to his season. The Devils will be without forward Austin Wells for the Saturday night rematch.  The teams will face-off again Saturday night at 6:00. The Devils will hope to win and put a good end to the first half of the season.
