#8 ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY (M1) 8, UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA (M1) 3
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Tempe, Ariz. (1/30/10) – The eighth-ranked Arizona State University Sun Devils returned to Oceanside Ice Arena on Saturday night looking to continue their push towards a National Championship bid. Facing them were their archrivals, the University of Arizona Icecats, looking to get their first win of the year against Arizona State. After a close contest between the two sides in the first, the Sun Devils offense took over in the final two periods and crushed the Icecats, 8-3.
The game was action-packed and fast-paced throughout most of the night as the two rival universities clashed in front of the large crowd of Sun Devil and Icecat fans. Arizona State would strike first on the power play as Paul Scola scored to give the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead. The Icecats would tie the game later in the period on the power play. Brady Lefferts scored just after a five-on-three man advantage ended to make it 1-1 and get the Icecat fans in attendance cheering. Just 65 seconds later, Joe Schweiger would make a nice move on the Arizona defense and scored to reclaim the lead for Arizona State, sending the Maroon and Gold fans into a frenzy. Later in the frame, Sean MacLachlan matched Schweiger by eluding the Devils’ defense and scoring the equalizer for the Icecats. Both sides would get into some skirmishes before the stanza ended, but the score would be 2-2 after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Sun Devils took control. Danny Anderson scored just past the one-minute mark to make it 3-2. Pat Lind added a goal later in the period to extended Arizona State’s lead to two. Midway through the frame, the skirmishes led into a fight that electrified the crowd. The Sun Devils would get a chance to pad their lead as they received a penalty shot but Joe Schweiger failed to convert the chance. Despite the failed chance, Schweiger did add to the Arizona State lead with just more than a minute remaining in the stanza for a 5-2 lead. The Icecats would respond quickly as Adam Treptow scored with just 35 seconds left as Arizona reduced the Sun Devils’ lead back to two heading to the third.
The action was fast in the third period as the Icecats tried to mount a comeback. However, the Sun Devils refused to let their archrivals get back in the contest. In the final five minutes, Arizona State’s offense would blow the game wide open. Paul Scola would get his second goal of the game to make it 6-3. Matt Mackey also pushed one in to join the scoring for Arizona State. Cameron Morgan would
score the last goal of the night as the Sun Devils record another victory over their rivals from Tucson. Up next for Arizona State, the Central Oklahoma Bronchos visit Tempe for a two-game series starting Friday night.
